Underworld. Film. Chapter 1. 02:43.
After looking at some footage of the film 'Underworld' in the opening sequence Selene (Kate Beckinsale) speaks about the history of vampires and Lycons (Werewolves). The setting is in an urban environment at night with lots of Gothic Architecture and rain pouring down; there was really nice examples of light hitting off surfaces and different kinds of shadows being projected. With these features in mind it made me think about applying some of these techniques to my own landscape painting (above).
I used the bowl in UW to help apply light surface details on the ground in the painting. The sea was influenced by the distant colours of the people walking in the rain in UW. Finally the far away building was used to help shape the background landscape in the painting.
This is another Monochrome study. For me, the best way to understand light is to be able to clearly show how light works just by using 1 colour; I feel colour is secondary part which is used to finalise a piece.
This is the same painting but with a complementary colour. This isn't the greatest piece but I definitely need to look into the relationship of colours more, which I will do by looking at examples of Renaissance art and try out various colour schemes.
Monochrome water study. I was experimenting to see how light may bounce from water and then into a cave/dark area. Jeremy Vickery goes over how light bounces on water surfaces in his training DVD I will need to look back at this and conduct some studies to get a better understanding of practical light situations on water.
Using gradient as my lighting guide, I experimented with how to add various features in this painting by following the flow of the light.
